The York University Lions men's soccer team will look to continue their blazing start to the season this weekend against the Windsor Lancers in the second and final meeting of the year between the two teams. The Lions have started the year 4-0 so far in their defence of the U SPORTS championship after a pair of wins over McMaster and Waterloo. The Lancers, meanwhile, find themselves with a 1-3 record going into Friday's match.
The Lions first took on the McMaster Marauders last Thursday night in their annual Orientation Game, and came to play. York dominated play early on and scored in the 10th minute off a goal from Ryan Robinson. Anthony Morano scored his fourth of the year in the 19th minute to push it to a 2-0 lead, before Christian Zeppieri tallied another in the 26th minute to make it a 3-0, the same lead the Lions would take into half-time. Zeppieri added another goal in the 51st minute to make it a 4-0 game and round out the scoring in a game they outshot the Lancers 19 -6 (11-4 on target).
York would carry this momentum into Sunday's matchup against the Waterloo Warriors. Morano would open the scoring with his U SPORTS-leading fifth goal of the season in the 40th minute to break the scoreless tie. Marco Sciortino would add another goal in first-half stoppage time, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead going into the break. Zeppieri would add another in the 57th minute of the second half to take the national lead in points with nine. The Lions would hold on for a 3-0 win in another dominant performance, outshooting the Warriors by a decisive 19-1 with 14 of the 19 on target.
The Lancers have not had an ideal start to the season as they carried an 0-2 record into last weekend. It would be more of the same for on Friday, as they went down early in 12th minute against the Waterloo Warriors. The Warriors would add another in the 56th minute to push the lead to 2-0, before Windsor replied in the 64th minute to make it 2-1 but would never get closer as they would lose to Waterloo 2-1. However, Windsor was able to build some positive momentum on Sunday in their match against the Brock Badgers. Windsor would strike quickly as they put one past Brock in the sixth minute to go up 1-0 early. They would carry that lead into halftime and build on it shortly after, scoring in the 54th minute double their advantage, and would hang on for a 2-0 victory, their first of the season.
These two teams met in the season opener back on August 28 in the Border City. The Lions would end up victorious in that one, with Morano scoring two of his side's four markers on their way to a 4-1 victory. York will hope for a similar result on Friday while Windsor will try to build off their first win of the year last weekend.
