LIONS BOW OUT TO BLUES IN NAILBITING SEASON OPENER

The York University Lions field hockey team opened its 2026 OUA regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Back Campus Fields. 

In a rematch of last season's OUA Championship, both defences controlled the pace and kept scoring opportunities limited in a tight first half. Lions' goalkeeper Ella Ciesielski delivered a standout performance, making crucial stops to keep the host Varsity Blues off the board for over 50 minutes of play. 

The match's deciding moment came in the 52nd minute when Toronto forward Catalina Meilleur found space in the circle and beat Ciesielski to score the game's lone goal. Despite a late push from the Lions' attack to find an equalizer, Toronto keeper Mary Yang stood firm to seal the win for the Blues. 

LOOKING AHEAD: 

The Lions will host the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field, in another rematch from the 2025 playoffs, and a rematch of the last five OUA semi-finals. The Lions will pay homage to their 2025 OUA and U SPORTS championship team in a pregame banner ceremony, while all team members will be presented with their national championship rings. Centre pass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., and admission is free.
