LIONS EARN IMPORTANT POINT TO STAY ATOP OUA WEST

The York University Lions women's soccer team earned a hard-fought point at home on Friday night, battling to a 1-1 draw against the Laurier Golden Hawks at York Lions Stadium.

York wasted no time applying offensive pressure early in the match, earning a corner kick in the seventh minute. The Lions immediately followed up with back-to-back scoring chances in the 8th minute, seeing shots from Joanna Abdelmalak and the Sabrina Fabiano blocked by the Golden Hawks' defence. Laurier's physical defending resulted in a foul and a yellow card issued to Grace Larsen in the ninth minute as York continued to control the early pace.

The match grew increasingly physical through the middle of the first half. York's Sofia Locker received a yellow card in the 15th minute, followed by a set-piece opportunity for Laurier as Ashley Greco delivered a corner kick in the 17th minute. Laurier continued to commit fouls under sustained pressure, giving York multiple free-kick opportunities. Greco earned another free kick for the visitors in the 33rd minute, but the game remained goalless.

York broke the tie late in the opening half. In the 39th minute, Nia Fleming-Thompson scored the first goal of the match off an assist from Joanna Abdelmalak to give the Lions a 1-0 lead entering half-time. This goal marks Fleming-Thompson's team's 7th goal of the season, giving her sole possession of the OUA lead over Greco, after both entered the match with six.

Looking for the equalizer, Laurier's Jessica Breda was robbed by  York goalkeeper Charlotte Phillips in the 51st minute. The Golden Hawks quickly earned another corner kick also in the 51st minute, but tension arose on the pitch as both sides were issued yellow cards back-to-back in the 53rd minute. York followed with a substitute bringing Amelia Joseph on for Sophia Capobianco in the 66th minute. The physical nature of the match reached a boiling point in the 71st minute, when Locker received her second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card, the Lions first of the season. Then, moments later,  a Golden Hawk was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty. Greco promptly stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty kick to level the match at 1-1 in the 72nd minute. Playing a woman down for the final 20 minutes, York's defence stood resilient. Phillips made a key save on Laurier's Vanessa Dias in the 78th minute, and Laurier sent another attempt high in the 83rd minute. York continued to press on despite the numerical disadvantage, earning a late corner kick in the 85th minute after substitutes Bianca Servidone and Leanna Massi entered the match. Tensions remained high in stoppage time as Laurier's Jessica Breda and Taya Johnson both picked up late yellow cards in the 90th minute respectively. Phillips came up big in the final moments, making a crucial save on shot by Vanessa Dias in the 90th minute to preserve the 1-1 draw.
