The York University Lions women's soccer team will look to continue their hot start this weekend when they take on the McMaster Marauders on Thursday night at York Lions Stadium before travelling to Waterloo to battle the Warriors on Sunday. Both York and McMaster head into this weekend undefeated on the season, with York sitting at 2-0 and the Marauders 1-0. Waterloo, meanwhile, is on the opposite end of the spectrum as they go into this weekend winless with an 0-2 record.
The Lions will also be looking to avenge last year's first-round playoff loss to the Marauders. McMaster won that game by a score of 3-0, scoring twice late in the first half and never looking back, ending the Lions season and giving them added motivation Thursday's contest.
This game will serve as the annual Orientation Game, which will see students from all York colleges are invited to attend for an amazing night of exciting activities, activations and contesting throughout the evening, making this game one of the most anticipated nights on the Lions soccer calendar.
The home side comes in after a strong opening weekend. They started the season off on Friday August 28, heading down to play a Windsor Lancers team that finished fourth in the OUA West last year. Nia Fleming-Thompson took care of business on the scoresheet, scoring both of York's goals in a 2-0 victory over the host Lancers. Charlotte Phillips also put together a phenomenal showing with seven saves against Windsor to hold the Lancers to a clean sheet despite the Lancers generating more shots on target than the Lions by a count of 7-5.
The Lions then hosted the Western Mustangs in their home opener on Sunday August 30. A formidable test, the Mustangs were one of the best teams in the OUA last season, finishing second in the West and losing in the semi-finals to the eventual OUA champions, the Toronto Varsity Blues. Fleming-Thompson continued her phenomenal early-season play, adding another goal in this one to bring her – and her team's – total to three on the season, with this goal being the difference in a 1-0 contest. Phillips also continued her solid start to the year, earning second clean sheet of the season in as many game with three saves, making her the inaugural York women's athlete of the week for the 2026-27 season.
McMaster will be coming to York Lions Stadium off a dominant performance against Algoma on Friday August 28th, as the Marauders dominated the visiting Thunderbirds 7-0. McMaster had six different goal scorers in that one, with Maria Annibale being the only multi-goal scorer, as she tallied both the first and last goals of the game for the Marauders. The Thunderbirds were unable to generate a single shot towards the net, while McMaster was able to register 23, 13 of which were on target.
Waterloo comes into this weekend still looking for their first win of this OUA season. They first took on the Mustangs in London, where they kept things close to start as the game went into halftime tied 0-0. Western would break the tie in the second half, scoring the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute on their way to a 1-0 victory. Waterloo would not fare better in their next matchup against Brock, as they opened the game with an own goal in the 29th minute to put the Badgers up 1-0. Brock would add another in the 44th minute to go up 2-0 which would end up being the final. Waterloo will head down to Windsor to face the also 0-2 Lancers before hosting the Lions on Sunday.
Kick-off against McMaster is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday night at York Lions Stadium. The match against Waterloo will kick-off on Sunday September 6th at 1 PM EST. Tickets for the McMaster game are available at yorkulions.ca/tickets, with Thursday's match also available on OUA TV.
