Derek has definitely taken the challenge to embody the CROSS Spirit (Character, Respect, Optimism, Sacrifice, Selflessness to heart and puts it on display each and every day. He joined the program as a walk-on and through his investment in what we deem the 'Heart of a Lion Lifestyle,' he graduates as a team captain and a recipient of the highest honour we can bestow upon a member of our program. Derek has proven through his actions, behaviours and choices that he is a man of strong Character. Derek has shown great Respect towards others and the process that is Tentanda Via within his life. Derek has an infectious Optimism that has its way of impacting those around him. Derek willingly makes the Sacrifices necessary to serve himself and the greater good. I am not even sure where to start to describe all the ways that Dan goes above and beyond for this program. He takes on so many roles that are not part of his job description simply to ensure that the players are able to succeed at and away from the rink. In addition, he then has to take on the responsibility of assuming some of my duties in the times when I step away to be with Team Canada. Dan does it all with an attention top detail that legitimately shows a Lion Pride that inspires us all to do the same. -Russ Herrington, Head Coach

Derek left a long-lasting impression not just on our school but also on our hockey program. The leadership skills he presented shined brightly as team captain. He led by example on and off the ice and always motivated our team through tough practices and rallied us for games. He is a person with a lot of passion for hockey and the dedication he had to our program was something that didn’t go unnoticed. The way he handles himself is a big part of why guys on our team look up to Derek and why he will have a lasting legacy for our program. The respect he showed to other teammates and coaches and his encouragement through good times and tough times really sets him apart. Derek is a guy I’m lucky to have played with and I am lucky to be able to call him my friend. He was a great teammate and even a better leader. He was a guy that you want to play for. Connor's consistency and dedication to represent the ideals, values, and behaviors of the York Lions Men's Hockey program definitely does not go unnoticed. Derek is the epitome of what it means to be a York Lion. He is a consummate professional, looked up to by everyone, and most importantly shows unwavering respect to everyone he encounters. Derek continually puts others ahead of himself, including the entire men’s hockey program. He always wanted what was best for the group, and never cared about personal success. Because of the way he carried himself he continued to get better each year, and was a huge part of any success we had in his time at York. It was an honour to play with him. -Brock McLeod, Forward
