Walters officially took on the position of offensive coordinator for the Lions on June 3, 2024. In his first season, the longtime Alberta Golden Bears offensive coordinator guided an offense that averaged averaged 214.6 passing yards per game and 108.8 rushing yards per game under his leadership, while finishing third in the OUA in third down conversion percentage (67%) and fifth in conversions (12).Â
Walters came to York coming off a long coaching career, which most notably includes three separate stints with the Golden Bears (2005-2009, 2013-2015, 2019-2023). In his last two years with the Golden Bears as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, he led a team that finished with the third most rushing yards per game and the third most passing yards in the country per game from 2022-2023. He also assumed the offensive coordinator role at Archbishop O'Leary Catholic High School in Edmonton from 2007-2009, and was the head coach of the Edmonton Huskies (CJFL) from 2010-2012.Â
The 53-year-old spent four years playing at the U Sports football level, playing for the Simon Fraser University Leafs before spending time in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the United States. Although being undrafted, Walters signed as a free agent with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL, where he played for five years. He later signed with the Edmonton Eskimos for an additional five years, and wrapped up his career with the Calgary Stampeders in 2004.Â
Walters won a Grey Cup in 2003 with Edmonton, his hometown team. He also won the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 2001, which is awarded to a CFL player with outstanding sportsmanship and someone who has made a significant contribution to his team, his community and association.Â
