David Ta was named interim head coach of the Lions in August 2022 after serving as the team’s assistant coach for the five previous seasons. He is just the fifth head coach in the 50+ year history of the Lions volleyball program. He guided the team to a 11-win improvement from 2021-22, as York went 13-7 and finished fourth in the OUA standings. They won their first playoff game since the 2015 OUA Bronze Medal game, defeating the Queen's Gaels in four sets. Despite eventually bowing out to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the Bronze Medla match, Ta was nominated for the 2022-23 Lions coach of the year award.
He brings over 20 years of experience in playing and coaching the sport of volleyball to athletes of all ages and abilities. As a NCCP Trained – Performance Coach, he has been coaching Ontario’s Red, Black and Elite Programs in the summers since 2018.
Ta also has coaching experience with the REACH Volleyball Club, where he has served as Technical Director since 2014.
He has received accolades for his coaching work at the provincial level, being named the 2020 OVA Mike Bugarski Male Coach of the Year, Recipient of the OVA Recognition Award 2019 and OVA Achievement Award in 2021.
