Hernan Humana, a three-time OUA East coach of the year award winner, returned to the men’s volleyball program four seasons ago for the first time since 1993-94, when he led the squad to an OUA East championship while Dyba was on sabbatical. He also spent 10 seasons as head coach of the Lions women’s team.

Humana returned as an assistant while his son, Felipe, is a member of the team and his daughter, Melissa, plays for the Lions women’s team.

The highlight of his coaching career came in 1996, when he led the Canadian Olympic beach volleyball tandem of John Child and Mark Heese to a bronze medal at the Atlanta Games, the first Olympic medal for Canada in the sport.

He is currently the director and head coach of the Elite Beach Volleyball Club, one of the most successful beach volleyball clubs in Canada.

A native of Chile, he received his Licenciatura degree (physical education) from the University of Chile prior to moving to Canada. Humana played 11 seasons with the Chilean national volleyball team and also coached the country’s juvenile national team. In Canada, his career continued at York, playing for men’s head coach Dyba in 1980-81. As a student, he completed two programs at York – an advanced coaching certificate and a master’s degree in sociology of sport.
