Erica Gavel came to the York women’s basketball coaching staff in 2015 after a stellar varsity career with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (2009-12). She helped the team win the Canada West championship and a CIS silver medal in 2011 and also won conference and national bronze medals in 2010. While at Saskatchewan, she also coached the Jr. Huskie Club for four years.
A serious knee injury cut short her career, but she discovered her same passion for basketball could transfer to the wheelchair game. Since taking up the sport in 2012, she has earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama, represented Canada at the 2015 U25 Women’s World Championships and, most recently, came home with a silver medal from the 2015 Toronto ParaPan Am Games. At these games, the senior women’s national team qualified for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Summer Games.
