Matthew Cheung returns to the York campus in 2018 as an assistant coach with the Lions. Cheung played at York from 2000-03 and won an OUA silver medal with the team in 2003. His playing career also consisted of a lengthy time spent with the Toronto Connex club team where he helped the team to five championships from 2000-13. The club won another North American title in both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the summer of 2019.

Cheung also has a wealth of coaching experience, including coaching Team Ontario’s U16 women’s team in 2015 and 2016 and the U16 men’s team in 2017. In 2019, his Team Ontario squad competed in a high performance tournament against international youth teams and finished second in their age group.

He’s an NCCP trained performance coach who previously coached the Centennial College women’s program and still coaches with club teams Leaside Volleyball and TOPS Volleyball. He works full-time as a math learning strategist at Centennial College in addition to teaching math courses.
