The York University Lions women's basketball team was defeated by the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 75-43 on Wednesday (Nov. 19) in a road game in Guelph, Ont.
Guelph's Katherine MacTavish opened the game with a long shot for three points, and the Gryphons continued to roll from there. They took an early lead as they ended the first quarter at 26-8.Â
The Lions improved on the second quarter by scoring 13, but by halftime the score line remained in Guelph's favour at 43-21. Despite a slow game on the third quarter, the Gryphons managed to score 32 more baskets in the final half to seal their victory.
Turnovers committed by the Lions proved critical in their loss. Out of 23 turnovers by the visiting team, the Gryphons took 22 points off them.
Courtney Osborne (Markham, Ont.) recorded 10 points and six rebounds, all of which came on the defensive glass.
Jackie Koudys (Smithville, Ont.) scored seven points and added two assists.Â
Guelph's Dana Van Balkom recorded a game-high of 22 points, 15 of which came from the three-point line.
The Lions are still looking for their first win of the season and their next opponent is the No. 7 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders on Saturday (Nov. 22) in Hamilton, Ont., beginning at 12pm.Â
