The York University women's basketball team was defeated by the McMaster Marauders 56-41 on Saturday (Nov. 22) in Hamilton, Ont.

The game was scoreless until McMaster's Clare Kenney nailed a jump shot at 6:33 into the first quarter to get the momentum going. The Marauders continued to basket jump shots, strongly dominating the Lions. Only
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) and
Nina Guzina (Etobicoke, Ont.) could net the ball into the basket in the first, and the Marauders led 12-4 after one quarter.

Fischer opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a jump shot at 8:55. The Marauders did not hold back and continuously pounded the York net with ball. After a jump shot by
Jackie Koudys (Smithville, Ont.), the Lions swished a trio of three-pointers, two from Koudys and another from Guzina. The second quarter ended with a score of 27-20, with the Marauders still in the lead.

In the third quarter, the Marauders hit three jump shots before the Lions could score two points from
Haley Bowie (Ancaster, Ont.). Bowie hit three more baskets in the quarter but McMaster still led 46-29 heading into the final frame.

With the start of the fourth, the Lions began confident, hammering in four shots before the Marauders could get a break.

After a jump shot from Fischer the Lions were able to close the gap to an 11-point difference, until the Marauders pounced back.

Bowie led all Lions with 11 points and added seven rebounds, while Koudys had eight points. Osborne finished with seven points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

Leaders from the Marauders included Hilary Hanaka with 15 points, Danielle Boiago with 14 points and Clare Kenney with 11 points.

The Lions are still looking for their first win of the season after an 0-5 start in the OUA East Division, while the Marauders improved to 5-1 on the year.

The next game for the Lions is on Wednesday (Nov. 26) against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston, Ont., beginning at 6pm.
