The York University Lions men's volleyball team nearly lost a two-set lead but held on to defeat the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on Friday night (Nov. 21) in Windsor, Ont.
Â
The Lions won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-21, but the Lancers were able to turn the game around in the third and fourth winning 25-18 and 25-19.
Â
The final set was a nerve wrecking battle with York holding the lead in the beginning. The Lancers tied the score at 14-14 from a service error. Shortly after, a service error and a service ace gave the Lions the win.
Â
The Lions opened up the scoring in the first set with a smashing kill by
Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.). The Lancers didn't let the Lions take the lead as they tied the score several times, but the Lions finally broke free of the tie-breaking battle after a score of 23-23, when two errors from the Lancers gave the Lions the win.
Â
The second set proved to be another tie-breaking battle with the Lions barely pushing through at the end with a final kill by Szeto to win the set.
Â
The Lancers came out determined in the third set and did not let the Lions advance. Kills from Gabriel Burlacu guided his team to shut down the Lions and win the set, with hope of a turnaround.
Â
In the fourth set, the Lancers battered kills on the Lions, never letting them lead and ending the game with a six-point lead.
Â
With the win, the Lions rest in fifth place with a 4-3 record, while the Lancers drop to eighth place with a 3-4 record.
Â
The Leaders from the Lions side included Szeto with 20 points, all on kills, as well as 12 digs,
Josh Henderson (Scarborough, Ont.) with 16 kills and 5.5 blocks and
