The York University Lions men's hockey team was defeated by a 3-1 score by the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night (Nov. 5) in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
An early goal by Tyler Strothers just 6:16 into the first period gave the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead that held through the rest of the opening frame and a scoreless second period. The Lions had many chances in the second – outshooting the Golden Hawks 13-11 – but could not solve Laurier goaltender Harrison Pharoah.
Â
It didn't take long in the third period for the Golden Hawks to put the game out of reach, however, as they scored two goals in the first three minutes of the frame to build a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Kyle Morrison found the back of the net just 1:05 into the period, and less than two minutes later Ryan Lopes did the same thing to give Laurier an insurmountable lead.
Â
The Lions finally got on the board at 10:24 of the period on a goal by
Michael Santini (Woodbridge, Ont.), with an assist to
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.), but that was as close as they would get.
Â
York goaltender
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) made 30 saves in the loss, while Pharoah stopped 35 to earn the win.
Â
The loss dropped the Lions to 3-7-0 on the year, and the Golden Hawks improved to 3-5-0.
Â
Up next for the Lions is another game in Waterloo, Ont., this time against the Warriors on Saturday night (Nov. 7). Puck drop is set for 6:30pm.
