Box Score The York University Lions men's volleyball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 on Saturday (Nov. 8) in North Bay, Ont.

The Lions won 25-19 in the first and second set, lost 25-23 in the third, and won 25-20 in the fourth. The win was their second of the season, improving their record to 2-2 on the year.

The Lions took an early lead in the first set with a kill by
Arthur Swarcz (Toronto). The set was tied at 18-18 until
Marko Dakic (Mississauga, Ont.),
Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) and
Josh Henderson (Scarborough, Ont.) nailed four kills to win the set by six points.

The Lions held a strong lead in the second set, never letting the Lakers score more points than them. The Lions committed a total of 13 kills from
Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.), Dakic,
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.), Szeto and Swarcz.

In the third set, a series of errors from the Lions allowed the Lakers to take an early lead that they held on to until the end of the game. The Lions were able to tie the set at 21-21, but kills by Cam Branch and Warren Taylor, and two errors from the Lions, allowed the Lakers to take a two-point advantage.

The Lakers held the lead in the fourth set until Duncan-Thibault tied the game 9-9 with a service ace. The Lakers then began to commit a series of errors and fell behind the Lions. The Lions overcame the Lakers with five points and won the set.

Leaders from the Lions included Szeto with 17 kills, one ace and one block; Dakic with 10 kills, three aces and one block and Swarcz with nine kills, three aces and four blocks.

Leaders from the Lakers included Branch with 16 kills, Sonego with six kills, one ace and two blocks, Taylor with four kills and two blocks and Jack Peckham with four kills.

The next game for the Lions is next Saturday (Nov. 15) against the Ryerson Rams at the Tait McKenzie Centre at 4pm.
