LIONS FALL TO RAVENS IN FINAL ROAD GAME OF REGULAR SEASON

The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 52-0 by the Carleton Ravens in their final road game of the regular season at MNP Park in Ottawa on Friday night (Oct. 9).

The Ravens improved to 5-2 on the year, their best mark since rejoining the OUA three seasons ago, and clinched a playoff berth. The loss dropped the Lions to 1-6.

Carleton starting quarterback Jesse Mills through the first of his four touchdowns on the first drive of the game to give the Ravens a 7-0 lead early, and they continued to roll from there. Two more passing majors from Mills and a York-conceded safety rounded out the first quarter of scoring, and the Ravens led 23-0 after one.

The Lions defence held the Ravens off the scoreboard for most of the second quarter, but with 4:35 remaining Mills threw another TD pass to increase the Ravens lead to 30-0. They added a one-yard rushing touchdown and a field goal on the final play of the quarter to lead 40-0 at the half.

The Lions got close to scoring twice in the second half. Nick Naylor (Abbotsford, B.C.) missed a field goal that was ultimately returned 129 yards the other way for a touchdown by Nathaniel Hamlin. And twice late in the fourth they went for it on third down while deep in Carleton territory but were stopped before the end zone both times.

York quarterback Eric Kimmerly (Oshawa, Ont.), starting in place of the injured Brett Hunchak (Calgary), finished 10-of-25 for 91 yards and with one interception.

Rookie receiver Nathaniel Pinto (Toronto) continued to be a bright spot for the Lions, catching six balls for a team-high 72 receiving yards.

On the other side of the ball, fellow rookie Jakob Butler (Sherwood Park, Alta.) was dominant for the second game in a row, recording a game-high 11 tackles.

Mills finished 15-of-20 for 277 yards and the four touchdowns before sitting in the second half with the big lead. Receiver Wilson Birch was on the receiving end of the first two scores and finished with four catches for 77 yards.

Carleton's leading rusher was Jahvari Bennett (Mississauga, Ont.), the brother of York receiver Jahmari Bennett (Mississauga, Ont.), who finished with 134 yards on 17 carries.

The Lions have one more game in the regular season and will return home to York Stadium to host the Queen's Gaels next Saturday (Oct. 17) beginning at 1pm.
