The York University Lions men's hockey team handed the Queens Gael's their first loss of the season while grabbing their first of the year on Friday (Oct. 16) in a 3-1 victory on the road in Kingston, Ont.
Â
In the early stages of the game the Lions peppered Gaels starting goaltender Kevin Baillie with a quick seven shots, but the Gaels escaped the scoring threat with no damage.
Â
The Gaels got on the board first when Spencer Abraham ripped a shot with traffic in front of
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) which was deflected by Andrew Wiebe that beat Perugini to give Queen's the lead. Â
Â
In the second period the Lions came out of the gates attacking. They drew an early penalty which they couldn't capitalize on, but it gathered the needed momentum to take control of the game.
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) crashed the net of the Gaels soon after the power play concluded and jabbed in his first goal of the 2015-16 season, tying the game up at 1-1. The Lions were outshot in the second frame 11-8 but Perugini turned aside all 11 shots.
Â
In the third period the Lions drew another call and took full advantage of the early power play as
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) redirected a point shot that snuck past Baillie to give the Lions their first lead of the night at 2-1. The Lions completed the comeback with an empty net tally from
Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) which finalized the game for the Lions. Their record is now 1-1-0 on the year.
Â
The Lions will be back in action again on Saturday (Oct. 17) in Oshawa, Ont., when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at 7:30pm.
