LIONS COME BACK TO EARN POINT AGAINST GOLDEN HAWKS

The No. 3 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team and Laurier Golden Hawks ended their match in a 1-1 draw on Thursday (Oct. 1) at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont., despite a dominant showing of ball possession by the Lions.

The tempo of the game by both sides was full of offence, as the match had a total of 19 shots combined between the two teams. Fourteen of those shots came from the Lions and were turned away by Golden Hawk goalkeeper Stephan Brudiu.

The first half had an exchange of scoring chances, but neither the Lions nor Golden Hawks could beat the solid goalkeeping performances. The game eventually saw its first score at the 35-minute mark when Niklas Bauer snuck in a shot passed Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.). Bauer had five of the 15 shots for the Golden Hawks on Thursday.

The score was 1-0 Laurier going into the half.

In the second half the Lions began to pour on the pressure and it resulted in a 50th-minute tally from Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scoring his first goal of the 2015 season to give the Lions an important point in the OUA West standings.

The Lions are now 6-1-2 on the season and will look to get back in the win column on Sunday (Oct. 4) against the Guelph Gryphons on the road. Game time is set for 3:15pm.
