The York University Lions women's volleyball team made its home debut with a 3-0 loss against the rival Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday evening (Oct. 30) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
Taking the first set 25-16 were the Gee-Gees, who gave the Lions a lot of trouble defensively. However, the Lions did well off of the rallies, grabbing points along the way to narrow the score to 16-11 mid-way through the set.
Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) was agile off the ball to give her team eight assists, while
Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) tallied 13 attacks and six digs.
In the second set the Gee-Gees spiked several balls deep into the Lions end off the get-go, which made it difficult for the home team to bounce back.
Kayla Clennon (Stouffville, Ont.) led the team with seven attacks and two kills, but it wasn't enough to stop the Gee-Gees from claiming the 25-15 win.
Heading into the third set the Lions found the spark they needed with Clennon coming out big from the right end of the court. Nailing 16 attacks over the net and making an impossible dig that gave her team a point midway through the set, the Lions trailed closely behind the Gee-Gees. However, by the end of the set the Gee-Gees were able to break free with a 25-17 win that closed off the game.
Â
Williams finished with a team-high seven points and 10 digs, while Dillon had 16 assists.
Next week the Lions will have their sights set on a win against the RMC Paladins on Friday (Nov. 6). Fans can catch the game at 6pm back at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Â
