On Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) the York University Lions women's volleyball team grabbed a 3-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre in North Bay, Ont.
Â
The first set featured a seven-point comeback from the Lakers midway through the action. Erika Lapierre was the key component to the team's success, allowing the Lakers to take the first set with a score of 25-21.
Â
It didn't take long for the Lions to quickly recover, however, as they claimed the second set with a more convincing 25-17 score. After forcing a lot of errors in the Lakers' end, the Lions regained their confidence and were able to squeeze out wins in the next two sets.
Â
The third set finished with a tight score of 27-25 and the fourth finished 25-20, both in the Lions' favour.
Â
Heather Setka (Winnipeg),
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) and
Callie Giaccone (Ottawa) all led the Lions in scoring with nine points each. Setka had seven kills and two blocks, while Witzell and Giaccone finished with six kills, two blocks and one service ace each.
Â
Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) had 32 of the 36 assists and
Cadence Currie (Scarborough, Ont.) worked hard off the ball to save the team with 15 digs.
Â
Up next for the Lions is a home fixture that will be played against the OUA West Division's Guelph Gryphons beginning at 2pm on Sunday (Nov. 15) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
