COX REPEATS AS CIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

York University Lions men's soccer player Michael Cox was named ArcelorMittal Dofasco Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) male athlete of the week for the period ending Nov. 8.

Cox, a fourth-year finance and business economics student from Calgary, merits his second straight athlete-of-the-week honour thanks to a superb performance at the CIS championship in Toronto, where he was named tournament MVP and helped the host Lions repeat as Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy champions.

The 6-foot-2 striker, who was in his first season with the team, scored a tournament-leading four goals, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 quarter-final victory over Cape Breton and the game-winner in a 2-0 shutout against UNB in the national final. In the semifinal round against UBC, he also scored in the shootout session to help his side prevail 1-0.

Cox finished as the tournament's leading scorer with four goals and also led all players with 11 shots on goal, and in six total playoff games he had eight goals, including the game winners in five of the Lions' six victories.

Cox is the third Lion to merit CIS athlete of the week honours this season. Women's soccer player Kiyani Johnson was the recipient of the female award in early September, and later that month football player Jahmari Bennett was the CIS special teams player of the week.

Sarah Inglis, a cross country runner from Trinity Western, earned the CIS female athlete of the week award after winning the gold medal at the CIS cross country championships.
