The York University Lions men's volleyball team was victorious over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday evening (Nov. 22) at the Tait McKenzie Centre by a score of 3-1.
Â
The first set of Sunday's match was controlled by the Blues from the get go, and the Lions couldn't recuperate as the Varsity Blues ran away with the first set 25-15. Toronto's Stefan Ristic was the key contributor to the Blues' dominance in the first set and in the match, as he finished with a game-high 24.5 points on 19 kills, four service aces and 1.5 blocks.
Â
The second set was a complete contrast to the first as the Lions roared to a hefty lead and were aggressive in their attack which gave them a 25-19 win, tying the match at one set apiece. The presence of
Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.) was felt in the second set as he skied for multiple spikes that set the tempo going into the third.
Â
The third set was similar to the second as the Lions would not be contained. The team carried the spark from the second and the Varsity Blues had no answer. Covach and
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto) were once again dominant forces that could not be stopped.
Â
In the fourth set the Lions were fully awake and on the prowl. The team was anchored by
Jules Muhawe (Orleans, Ont.) setting up teammates such as
Tim Jensen (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) for powerful spikes. The Lions went on to take the fourth set 25-23 to win the match.
Â
Szwarc led the way for the Lions with 21 points on 17 kills and three blocks.
Â
The Lions are now 5-5 on the season and will look to add to Sunday's win on Friday (Nov. 27) when they travel to Guelph, Ont., to take on the 2-6 Gryphons.
