The York University Lions men's basketball team came from behind and took down the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 83-79 on Saturday night (Nov.28) in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
The Lions began the game slowly, getting outscored 25-11 in the first quarter. In the second quarter the relentless Lions pounced back with 23 points but still trailed 41-34 going into the half.
Â
They continued to chip away at the deficit throughout the second half and finally took their first lead of the game with 2:25 left. After that point the Golden Hawks twice tied the contest but could not regain the lead, and the Lions held on for the four-point win.
Â
Nathan Culbreath (Kingston, Ont.) was an offensive machine on Saturday evening, totalling a season-high 31 points to go with nine rebounds, four of which were offensive. Not only did Culbreath lead all Lions in points but also in rebounds and steals.
Â

Â
Shane Reader (Toronto) once again was consistent at the point guard position, scoring 17 points along with facilitating the ball to the hot hand of Culbreath. The majority of points from
Phillip Gillen (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Gene Spagnuolo (Maple, Ont.) came in the second half and their 20 combined points proved to be crucial in the win.
Â
The Lions are now 3-4 on the season and are not back on the hardwood until Friday, Jan. 8, when they make the short trip downtown to face the 1-4 Toronto Varsity Blues.
