GOLDEN HAWKS WIN BIG IN FINAL CONTEST OF 2015

The York University Lions women's hockey team rounded out its fall season with a 5-1 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night (Nov. 29) at the Sun Life Arena in Waterloo, Ont.

The win snapped a three-game winning streak by the Lions and dropped them to 2-3-6-1 on the year, while the Golden Hawks improved to 6-0-4-1.

The Golden Hawks opened the game with a power play goal at 11:39 from Robyn Degagne who was assisted by teammates Jacky Normandeau and Haley Baxter. It was the only goal of the first period.

In the second, Laurier slipped in another goal past Lions goaltender Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.). Erika Kiviaho was able to finish off of an opportunity in front of the net set up by Madison MacCulloch at 17:51 and the Golden Hawks carried a two-goal lead to head into the last period.

Early in the third period at 3:31, Golden Hawks Jessica Prevette upped the score with another goal assisted by MacCulloch, and Baxter was able to hit home a fourth goal off of a power play opportunity with the help of Prevette and Kiviaho at 13:01.

The Lions were able to grab themselves a goal at 16:20. Executing off of a one-man advantage, Erin Locke (Toronto) received the puck from Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope, Ont.) and older sister Amy Locke (Toronto), and slammed the puck past the gloves of goaltender Lauren Webber.

However, the Golden Hawks were able to finalize the 5-1 score at 17:16 with an empty-net goal from MacCulloch. Prevette and Giuliana Pallotta were credited with the assists.

Overall the Lions and Golden Hawks each took 27 shots on net despite the uneven score line. Webber made 26 saves and Lee made 22.

The Lions will return to the ice after the holidays on Saturday, Jan. 9 to take on the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop will be at 2pm at the Gryphon Central Arena.
