The York University Lions men's volleyball team was defeated by the Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Nov. 7) at the Tait McKenize Centre in four close sets.
Â
The Lions battled all game long as each set was within striking distance and could have been won by either team.
Â
The Lions and Gaels play a similar style which resulted in the close sets (25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20). The Lions' immense power was in full effect on Saturday as
Nicolas Pirnat (Ottawa) and
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto) both finished with a game-high 21 points. Pirnat had 19 kills and two blocks, while Szwarc had 14 kills, four blocks and three service aces.
Â
The player who was setting up the power spikes was setter
Logan Mend (Naramata, B.C.), who finished with a game-high 53 assists.
Â
The atmosphere inside of the Tait McKenzie Centre was electric from the get go, and one contributing factor to the fan experience was the tandem of
Jules Muhawe (Orleans, Ont.) as he set up
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) for multiple explosive kills.
Â
In addition to Szwarc's impressive play at the net,
Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.) joined the block party with 3.5 of his own, and he added 10 kills and one service ace for 14.5 points.
Â
After the loss, the Lions have a .500 record of 3-3 and will head to North Bay, Ont., on Saturday (Nov. 14) to take on the Nipissing Lakers beginning at 2pm.
