The York University Lions women's volleyball team was swept in straight sets by the Queen's Gaels on Saturday evening (Nov. 7) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The first two sets were played out in similar fashion as the Lions fell 25-14 in each. Although the scoreboard showed the Lions falling by double digits, the mistakes were limited and the overall team intensity was apparent.
The Lions came out with more pressure in the third set and pushed the Gaels early.
Cadence Currie (Scarborough, Ont.) led the way with her play in the set and finished the match with eight points and 13 digs.
The Gaels and Lions exchanged scoring plays but late in the set, the Lions began to slip, falling back by two. However,
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) rejected back-to-back spikes which deadlocked the score at 21-21, forcing a Queens's timeout. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Gaels capitalized on a few late York errors and sealed the match with a 25-23 third-set win.
Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) led the team in scoring with nine total points along with seven digs on Saturday night.
The Lions split their weekend with a victory over RMC on Friday night, which brought their season record to 2-2 on the year. The team will next travel to North Bay, Ont., on Saturday (Nov. 14) to take on the Nipissing Lakers beginning at 6pm.
