The York University Lions women's basketball team fell to the Queen's Gaels by a score of 64-47 on Saturday (Nov. 7) in its season opener on the road in Kingston, Ont.
Â
The Gaels opened up an early seven-point lead after the opening quarter at 17-10, and pushed the advantage to 33-21 at the half. The Lions came out strong following the break to narrow the gap to six points mid-way through the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get as the Gaels went on a run and eventually secured the big win.
Â
The Lions were led in scoring by
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.),
Emma Thompson (London, Ont.) and
Sandra Nagowska (Peterborough, Ont.), all of whom had eight points on the night.Â
Â
The defensive numbers produced from
Taylor Ross (Cookstown, Ont.) were dominant, as Ross filled the stat sheet with 10 rebounds and two steals while also rejecting five Gael shot attempts.
Â
The Gaels were led in the scoring department by Jenny Wright, who finished with a game-high 15 points and four assists and filling the stat sheet for the Gaels was Robyn Pearson, who finished the night with 13 rebounds and nine points in 27 minutes.
Â
The Gaels shot 37% from long range which was a key factor in their victory over the Lions.
Â
The Lions will be back on the hardwood next weekend with another road trip, this time to North Bay, Ont., for a match-up against the Nipissing Lakers. Tip-off is on Friday evening (Nov. 13) at 6pm.
