NO. 7 LANCERS NARROWLY GET PAST LIONS

The York University Lions men's hockey team was narrowly defeated by a 1-0 score by the No. 7 nationally-ranked Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Jan. 31) in Windsor, Ont.

The lone goal of the game was scored in the second period at 18:09 when Drew Palmer and Scott Prier assisted Dylan Denomme with the goal.

York goaltender Mitch Maraschiello (Buffalo, N.Y.) had his second straight tremendous showing between the pipes, making 31 saves and allowing just the one goal. In his first start last week he shut out the Western Mustangs by a 1-0 score.

In the first period the Lions hammered 12 shots at the Lancers, compared to eight by the home team.

In the second the Lancers hounded the Lions with 16 shots, compared to the Lions 10 shots.

In the third and final period the Lions smacked in another 10 shots with hope of a goal, but weren't able to squeeze one past Lancers goalie Parker Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk finished with 32 saves.

With three straight losses, the Lions have slipped to the bottom of the OUA West standings with 20 points and a 9-14-2 record, tied for ninth place with the Brock Badgers. However, they both sit just one point back of a three-way tie for sixth.

The Lancers are at the top of the division with a 20-4-1 record for 41 points and sit four points clear of the rest of the field.

The Lions wrap up the regular season next weekend, beginning with a game against the Ryerson Rams on Thursday (Feb. 5) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
