The York University Lions women's basketball team was defeated by the No. 1 nationally-ranked Windsor Lancers 82-43 in Windsor's Shoot for a Cure game on Saturday (Jan. 31) in Windsor, Ont.

The Lions had a slow start, only scoring eight points in the first quarter compared to the Lancers 20. The Lions picked up speed in the second as
Courtney Osborne (Markham, Ont.),
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.),
Emma Thompson (London, Ont.) and
Nina Guzina (Etobicoke, Ont.) scoring 19 points compared to the Lancers' 17 points.

The half ended with a score of 37-27 with the Lions only trailing by 10 points.

The four-time defending CIS champion Lancers showed their strength in the second half, however, as they showered the basket with shots and ended the third quarter with 30 points to blow the game open at 67-28 after three.

The Lions began to pick up their game in the fourth quarter as they matched the Lancers' 15 points, but it was much too late.

Osborne and Windsor's Cheyanne Roger each scored 14 points. Osborne also added eight rebounds, two assists and converted 6-of-6 free throws. Roger recorded six rebounds and two blocks.

Seupersadsingh also finished in double digits with 10 points.

The Lions linger at the bottom of the OUA East standings with a record of 2-13 and have already been eliminated from the playoffs, while the Lancers sit at the top of the OUA West with a record of 13-1.

The next contest for the Lions is on Saturday (Feb. 7) in a game against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont., beginning at 6pm.
