With a 1-0 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at York Stadium on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13), the No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team climbed to the top of OUA West standings with a 4-0-1 record.

The first half saw a closely matched contest between both teams, as possession shifted from one end of the field to the other. However, in the 18
th minute the Lions snatched their first goal from a powerful set piece delivered by midfielder
Jonathon Lao (Unionville, Ont.) that was headed home into the near post by striker
Michael Cox (Calgary), his third goal of the season.

Although the second half remained goalless, both teams continued to compete. Cox ended the game with six shots off and Lao and forward
Alon Badat (Thornhill, Ont.) grabbed two shots each.

Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.) grabbed his third cleansheet of the season, playing a solid game between the bars and making two saves in the contest.

The Lions will head out on the road for their next five contests, beginning against the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 3:15pm in St. Catharines, Ont. Their next home game will come on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8:15pm when they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to York Stadium.
