Rookie
Stefan Popovic's lone goal in the 22
nd minute was all the York University Lions men's team needed to seal a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday (Sept. 19).
Â
The No. 1 nationally-ranked Lions started the game off strong, finding a lot of success in the final third, but had some trouble putting the ball in the back of the net.
Â
In the 22
nd minute however, Popovic (Richmond Hill, Ont.) executed off of a corner kick whipped in by fellow rookie
Owen Pearce (Markham, Ont.) After making a darting run to meet the ball at the near post, Popovic grabbed his first goal as a Lion and put the team up 1-0 to close off the first half.
Â
The men continued their momentum into the second half as they dominated the Badgers in possession and chances on net.
Â
The game tallied 11 shots for the Lions as opposed to only three shots for the badgers.
Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) and
Jarek Whiteman (Brampton, Ont.) claimed three shots each.
Â
Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.) earned the cleansheet in net while making three saves. Brock goalkeeper Matthew Zaikos stood on his head to keep his team in the game, making 10 saves and allowing the single goal.
Â
The win secures the Lions their top spot in the OUA West standings at 5-0-1.
Â
In the next week, the men will be preparing for their next match that will be played in Windsor, Ont., against the Windsor Lancers. Kick-off will be at 3:15pm. on Saturday (Sept. 26).
