The No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team suffered its first loss to an OUA opponent in nearly two years on Saturday (Sept. 26) with a 1-0 loss to the No. 8 Windsor Lancers on the road.
Â
The Lions entered the battle of nationally-ranked teams riding a 33-game winning streak against teams from the OUA dating back to a 1-0 loss to the McMaster Marauders on Oct. 5, 2013. They dominated the match in Windsor, Ont., and controlled possession throughout, but in the 89
th minute Windsor rookie Jamar Redhead (Thornhill, Ont.) got to the end of a cross pass to slip the ball past the fingers of York goalkeeper
Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.).
Â
The Lions are now 5-1-1 on the year and in third place in the OUA West standings, although they have played one less game than second-place McMaster and three less than first-place Windsor.
Â
Michael Cox (Calgary) was the Lions' biggest threat of the game, almost putting away three chances in the second half and finishing the contest with an impressive eight shots off. His best attempt on goal came in the 67
th minute when he tapped the ball beyond Windsor keeper Kyle Vizirakis (Windsor, Ont.) but the shot slipped past the wrong side of the post.
Â
Throughout the game, third-year midfielder
Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.) dominated the midfield, offering many penetrating passes to the Lions' offensive line, and he was a key contributor to the men's success in the final third.
Â
Overall the Lions tallied an astounding 17 shots off as opposed to the Lancers, who only tallied 10 in comparison.
Vizirakis finished with seven saves in the match, while Vance stopped three shots.
Â
Next, the men will stay on the road and try and snatch three points away from the Western Mustangs on Sunday (Sept. 27) and will then head to Waterloo, Ont., on Thursday (Oct. 1) to face the Laurier Golden Hawks.
