The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 67-10 by the No. 7 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ont.
Â
The Lions played a strong first quarter. After McMaster scored on its first two possessions and added a third score on a defensive touchdown on an interception return, the Lions got on the scoreboard late in the frame when rookie quarterback
Brett Hunchak (Calgary) completed back-to-back passes to
Ryan Dunaway (Burlington, Ont.), the first for 47 yards and the second into the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown to cut the Marauders lead to 17-7.
Â
On McMaster's next possession, the Lions defence stuffed the Marauders on a third-down try at the seven-yard line to prevent another score and take over the ball to start the second.
Â
The Marauders added another two touchdowns in the second quarter and York kicker
Nick Naylor (Abbotsford, B.C.) was good on a 27-yard field goal to give McMaster a 31-10 lead at the half.
Â
When the teams returned for the second half the Marauders turned up the intensity and the Lions could not match it. McMaster held the Lions scoreless in the final 30 minutes and added 36 points of their own to finish their Homecoming game with the one-sided victory.
Â
Hunchak finished 15-of-32 for 182 yards, with the one touchdown as well as a pair of interceptions. Dunaway was the team's leading receiver with three catches for 78 yards and the touchdown.
Â
Also having another big game was running back
Jesse Amankwaa (Etobicoke, Ont.), who finished with 83 yards on 20 carries.
Â
On defence, linebacker
Nikita Starchenko (Whitby, Ont.) was tremendous with a game-high seven tackles in just over two quarters of play before he left the game with an injury. The Lions also sacked McMaster quarterback Asher Hastings three times with
Hussein Hazime (Toronto),
Damone Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) and
Reid Jeffs (Mississauga, Ont.) recording one each. Hazime is currently ranked second in the OUA with five sacks on the season.
Â
Hastings, who is second in the conference in passing yards per game, finished with 306 on 20-of-25 and four touchdowns. Danny Vandervoort was on the receiving end of two of the scores as part of his six-catch, 132-yard afternoon.
Â
Linebacker Jake Heathcote had both interceptions in the game, including the one he returned 27 yards for the touchdown. He also finished with a game-high seven tackles.
Â
The Lions will be back in action at home next week when they host the rival Toronto Varsity Blues in the 46
th Red & Blue Bowl on Friday night (Oct. 2). Kick-off is set for 7pm at York Stadium.
