The York University Lions men's soccer team bounced back after Saturday's loss with a convincing 3-1 win on the road against the Western Mustangs on Sunday (Sept. 27) in London, Ont.
Â
The game was intense and fast-paced off of the first whistle, and after a superb individual effort by
Michael Cox (Calgary) in the 22
nd minute, the Lions were up a goal by the end of the first half. Cox showed sharp anticipation skills which enabled him to intercept a back pass to Western goalkeeper Ben Cowman and tuck the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Â
At the start of the second half the Mustangs were determined to keep things interesting when  Christian Douglas (Oakville, Ont.) unexpectedly finished off of a volley to secure a tie in the 47
th minute.
The goal didn't put a dent in the Lions' confidence, however, as midfielder
Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.) was quick to respond with another goal to put the team back in the lead six minutes later.
Â
In the 73
rd minute, Cox finalized the win with his second goal of the match from another individual and technical piece of skill. With a Western defender trying to push him off the ball and Cowman rushing out to close the scoring angle, Cox remained strong to slide the ball accurately into the net from a high-pressure situation.
Â
The Lions overwhelmed the Mustangs throughout the game, finishing with 13 shots, including Cox with six, Lao with three and
Paramvir Sekhon (Mississauga
, Ont.),
Benjamin Futorlansky (Richmond Hill, Ont.),
Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.), and
Matt Stinson (Toronto, Ont.) with one each.
Â
The win improved the Lions' record to 6-1-1 on the year and into sole possession of second place in the OUA West with 19 points. Up next is a match against the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, Ont., on Thursday (Oct. 1) at 8:15pm.
