The York University Lions men's volleyball team defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues in three close sets on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 17) at the Goldring Centre.

At 6-8, the Lions are currently tied for fifth position in the OUA standings with the Western Mustangs with 12 points each, while the Varsity Blues fell to 7-5 on the year and are currently fourth.

Banding together to end the game in three close sets, the Lions were able to outscore the Varsity Blues 25-22 in the first set, 25-17 in the second and 25-22 in the third to add another two points to their record on the year.

Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.),
Nicolas Pirnat (Ottawa) and
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto) each contributed the most points to the Lions combined total of 61 points during the match. Covach had 16 points with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Pirnat had 12 kills and Szwarc had 11.

Spencer Kingzett (Penticton, B.C.) and
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) also lent six points each to the Lions total, while
Logan Mend (Naramata, B.C.) put up 46 assists to the board.

The Varsity Blues' William Colucci tallied the most points (16) for his team with 14 kills and seven digs, and Aleksa Miladinovic assisted 28 of Toronto's 31 kills.

Within the week, the Lions will prepare to take on the Queen's Gaels at 8pm on Friday (Jan. 22). The Gaels will be hosting the fixture at the Kingston Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).
