The York University Lions women's volleyball team came from behind on Saturday (Jan.23) to defeat the RMC Paladins 3-1 in Kingston.
The Lions attack was led by
Cadence Currie (Scarborough) who continues to dismantle the competition. Currie finished Saturday's match with a team high 16 points to go along with 18 digs and 10 kills.
Saturday's match saw the 1-12 Paladins take the first set 25-22 over the Lions. The Paladin surge was orchestrated by a dominate performance from Kara Stephan, who totaled a game high in points with 20, kills 15, and digs 28.
The Lions were unfazed by the Paladins quick start, as they came marching back and took the second set by a score of 25-18. The Lions comeback consisted of a complete team effort as Currie, Keeva Macleod (Ottawa), and
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) all finished in double figures in points. The third set was much of the same story as the second, the Lions continued to pressure the Paladins until the game broke wide open and Lions took advantage. The final score in the third set was 25-16 Lions.
The fourth and final set on Saturday saw the Lions shut down the Paladins' offense, as the Lions allowed only 11 total points. The Lions defensive dominance was led by block specialist Witzell as she continues her impressive season above the net.
After Saturday's win the Lions improve to 5-8 and are in the middle of the pack in the OUA standings. The RMC Paladins fall to 1-12 and are in the basement of the OUA.
The Lions are back on the hard wood January 31
st when they travel to the Canadian Capital to take on a 7-4 Ottawa Gee-Gees squad.Â
