The York University Lions women's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak on Friday night (Sept. 30) when they faced the Waterloo Warriors, winning by a score of 2-1. The game took place at Warrior Field in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
The Lions held off a late rally attempt from the Warriors with there tough defence but the victory could very much be attributed to York's early offensive surge.
Â
In the first half, standout fifth-year striker
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) found her way to the back of the net in the 34
th minute. This was closely followed by a goal from
Kiyani Johnson (Brampton, Ont.), which was assisted by
Ashley Nater (Pickering, Ont.). This closed out the half well for the Lions and left the Warriors on their heels moving into the second half.
Â
The Lions highlighted the second half defensively, only allowing one goal by Ciara Dunne and saving the other two attempts on net.
Â
Friday's win gives the Lions their seventh of the season and puts them two points ahead of the Western Mustangs. They now have 24 points in the OUA West Division.
Â
The Lions next game will take place on Sunday (Oct. 2), when they travel back to Waterloo, Ont., to face the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Lions will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when they attempt to stay undefeated against the Guelph Gryphons.Â
