JOHNSON'S LATE GOAL GIVES LIONS VICTORY OVER GOLDEN HAWKS

The York University Lions women's soccer team took the field against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) in Waterloo, Ont., and earned a 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal by Kiyani Johnson.

The first half of Sunday's game went scoreless as the Lions and the Golden Hawks embraced in a defensive struggle. Both teams pressed offensively but could not seem to find the right touch. York had 11 shots on net throughout the contest while Laurier had seven.

The second half of the match would end being more successful for the Lions when Johnson, a second-year striker from Markham, Ont., scored in the 72nd minute to deliver the Lions the victory.

Goalkeeper Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) was phenomenal as she saved all five shots on goal to keep the Golden Hawks scoreless in the match.

Sunday's win gives the Lions their eighth of the season and helps them remain undefeated on the year. They now have 27 points and an 8-0-3 record as they maintain the top spot in the OUA West standings. The Laurier Golden Hawks loss drops them to 4-2-5 on the season with 17 points and the fifth spot in the division.

The Lions' next game will take place on Thursday night (Oct. 6) when they face off against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont. York will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to take on the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field.
