LIONS STRETCH UNBEATEN STREAK TO EIGHT WITH WEEKEND SWEEP

The York University Lions women's field hockey team won all three of its games against the Waterloo Warriors, McGill Martlets and Queen's Gaels over Thanksgiving weekend (Oct. 8-9) and did not allow a goal to run its unbeaten streak to eight games.

Saturday's game took place in Waterloo, Ont., when the Lions faced off against the Warriors. The match was a low-scoring defensive battle highlighted by the only goal, and the game-winning goal, by Mikhaela Slavin (Pickering, Ont.). The Lions would now roll into Sunday with a 1-0 win under their belt.

Sunday's first game against the McGill Martlets was an absolutely dominating 7-0 victory for the Lions. Five different Lions made their way onto the score sheet as Ravneet Kalkat (Mississauga, Ont.) scored two goals, Slavin had one, Sophie Restauro (Calgary) scored one and Rachel Modestino (Oakville, Ont.) addoned one of her own. The fifth Lion to have her name on the scorecard was Hailey Bakker (Goderich, Ont.), who scored back-to-back goals in the first half of the match. The Lions were just too much for McGill to handle and York hoped to keep that rolling into their final game of the weekend.

The final game took place on Sunday afternoon. The first half of the match was gridlocked as both Queen's and York fended off each other's offensive attempts. The second half would be more rewarding, but only for the Lions. Kalkat broke the to 0-0 tie with her third goal of the weekend at the 60th minute. Kyra McKinnon (Toronto) added to the lead for the final goal of the match in the 64th minute and capped of the 2-0 win for the Lions.

The past weekend's wins move the Lions to 7-1-2 on the season with 23 points and the third place spot in the OUA standings.

The Lions will be off for two weeks and their next game will take place on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they take the field against the second-place Toronto Varsity Blues at U of T beginning at 10:45am.
