The York University Lions women's field hockey team returned to action on Sunday (Oct. 23) with a doubleheader at the Back Campus Fields to close out the regular season, falling to the Toronto Varsity Blues 5-0 and earning a 1-1 draw with the Mustangs.
The first match against the Varsity Blues was a tough one for the Lions as the Blues scored two goals in the first half and three more in the second. The early jump by the Varsity Blues would be enough to hold off an inspired full-game effort by the Lions.
The Lions' second match of the day was a representation of their ability to respond to adversity. The first half of the match against the Mustangs was scoreless as both teams made sure to set the tone on the defensive side of the ball.
In the second half both teams would light up the scoreboard. York drew first blood in the 48
th minute when
Michelle Per (Port Moody, B.C.) beat the Western goalkeeper to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the game. Western would respond to York's goal quickly as Lindsay Borell scored a goal of her own in the 57
th minute. The goal would not be answered by York as the game finished in a final score of 1-1.
With the outcomes of both games the Lions now stand at 7-2-3 with 24 points and finish the regular season with the third overall spot in the OUA standings. The Lions will return the field on Friday (Oct. 28) for the OUA quarter-finals and will host the sixth seed in London, Ont.
