The York University Lions women's hockey team earned a 3-2 shootout victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday (Oct. 23) at Canlan Ice Sports.
In the first period the Rams jumped out to an early lead when Ailish Forfar scored at 14:18. However, the call was answered just two minutes later when
Kelsey McHolm (Winnipeg) and
Taylor Davison (Oakville, Ont.) found
Leah Hibbert (Winnipeg,) for the tying goal.
The second period would only contain one goal courtesy of the Lions. McHolm and Davison set up
Dana Somerville (Hockley, Ont.) for the Lions' second goal of the game, giving them a 2-1 lead moving into the third period.
In the third the Rams punched back with a goal from Lauren Nicholson. The goal would tie up the game and it would stay at 2-2 as time expired forcing the match go to overtime. Ten minutes of extra time did not solve anything and the game headed to a shootout.
The overtime shootout would be goaltender
Lauren Dubie's (London, Ont.) time to shine as she stood in the crease with ice in her veins. Dubie would go on to stop both shot attempts on her net. Ryerson's goalkeeper would have a tougher time stopping the puck against a group of hungry Lions that scored on two of three attempts. The first successful attempt came from
Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) when she weaved down the ice and showed off some impressive stick handling to fake out the goaltender and get the goal. The final York attempt that solidified the win came from Somerville, who made an amazing move pulling back the puck from the lunging Ryerson goaltender and poking in the puck behind her.
The shootout win gives the Lions a record of 1-1-2-0 on the season. Their next game will take place on Saturday (Oct. 29) when the Laurentian Voyageurs travel to Canlan Ice Sports to take on the Lions. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
