BADGERS END LIONS' WIN STREAK AT FOUR GAMES

The York University Lions men's hockey team returned to the ice at Canlan Ice Sports against the Brock Badgers on Friday night (Oct. 28) and suffered a 3-1 defeat to end their four game winning streak.

In the first period of the game York came out of the gate hot. In the first five minutes of the match the puck was more often than not being pushed into the Badgers' end of the ice. The aggressive play seemed to lead go more breakaway opportunities that Brock would soon capitalize on.

At 6:15 the Badgers advanced the puck into the Lions end and, after a few quick passes, Sam Banga scored with a quick wrist shot.

Six minutes later at 12:22 the Badgers advanced the puck once again on a breakaway. Matthew MacLeod made a quick pass from the left slot as Andrew Radjenovic finished the one timer before York goalkeeper Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) could react.

In the second period the intensity of the game reached its boiling point. The Lions began hunting, teeing off on any Badger that tried to enter their end of the ice. On the other side of the puck the Badgers were doing their best to stop any shot attempt by the Lions. The Lions' persistence would end up paying off around the half way mark of the period on a power play when Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) and Kyle Campbell (Halifax) assisted Scott Feser (Red Deer, Alta.) as he scored on a flick of the wrist at 10:30.

With a score of 2-1 leading into the third period the Lions would have to find an edge to even the score up. What followed was the same result of the first two period; great shot selections and shot attempts met by a wall of Badgers crowding the net. The Lions were held off just enough when the Badgers scored their final goal of the night on an empty net to close out the game.

With tonight's loss the Lions now move to 4-3 on the season and currently hold the fourth overall spot in the OUA West standings. Their next game will take place at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday night (Oct. 29) when they face off against the Western Mustangs at 7pm.
