Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | By Joey Ricottone

LIONS BLANK MUSTANGS FOR LOPSIDED VICTORY

The York University Lions men's hockey team returned to Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday (Oct. 29) for their second game in as many days and recovered from Friday's loss to post a dominant 5-0 victory over the Western Mustangs.

In the first period of the contest the Lions came out in an enforcing, aggressive way, and they aimed and succeeded in imposing their will onto their opponents from the opening whistle. The scoring was opened up when Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) scored at 15:01 on a power play. Steven Janes (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) were credited with the assists on the quick wrist shot goal. The goal closed out the first period with a score of 1-0.

The second period continued to show aggressive behavior as the boards were shaking every time a player would roam near the glass. The Lions started to get hot again after pressing forward offensively. Bryce Milson (Miramichi, N.B.) made his way into enemy territory when he received the puck, pulled back and scored on the backhand behind the lunging Western goaltender. The assists were credited to Reid Jackman (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Nathan Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.).

The men in red would be back on the score sheet soon after when Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) scored another power play goal off of the rebound of Tyler Mort's (Keswick, Ont.) slap shot attempt and Scott Feser's (Red Deer, Alta.) pass. The Lions would enter the third period with a 3-0 lead.

In the third the Lions would look to put the nail in Western's coffin early, and they received their first opportunity on a 5-on-3 power play goal from Kyle Campbell (Halifax). Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) made the first pass to Sheppard, who then fed a beautiful pass to Campbell to finish the play.

Just over one minute later Milson scored the final goal of the game at 6:32, when Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) made a quick pass to Sheppard who made a similar pass as his previous assist, firing the puck from the slot across the goalies face as Milson finished behind the goalie's back. The Lions would maintain control of the puck moving forward until the clock ran out.

Rookie goaltender Alex Fotinos (Toronto) earned his first career shutout in net while making 39 saves.

With the win against the Mustangs the Lions move to 5-3-0 on the season with 10 points and are currently third in the OUA West standings. Their next game will take place on Thursday evening (Nov. 3) when they face the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre. The Lions will return home to Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday, Nov. 11 when they play the UQTR Patriotes.
