The York University Lions men's soccer team twice rallied from a goal down to defeat the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 3-2 at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont., on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2).
Â
The Lions had their work cut out for them early on against the Golden Hawks as Laurier made its way onto the scoreboard first with a Niklas Bauer goal in the 14
th minute.
Â
It was not until late in the half that York responded with a goal by the foot of
Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) in the 44
th minute for a 1-1 tie at the half.
Â
After halftime the action would continue when Bauer found his way to the back of the net once again for the Golden Hawks in the 55
th minute.
Â
Now sitting at a 2-1 deficit the Lions would have to find a way to respond and they found the answer in
Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.). Cavallini managed to tie the game up at two when the first-year midfielder scored an unassisted goal in the 66
th minute. The heroics did not end there for Cavallini as five minutes later he was set up by
Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.) and scored to give the Lions their first lead of the game.
Â
The third and final goal for the Lions would prove to be backbreaking for the Golden Hawks as they would be unable to answer the offensive efforts of the Lions.
Â
Cavallini is now tied for fifth in OUA scoring with seven goals on the season.
Â
Sunday's win keeps York undefeated on the season with their ninth victory of the 2016 campaign and the Lions sit in first place in the OUA West standings with 29 points and a 9-0-2 record. With the loss Laurier now sits at 6-4-1 and holds fourth place in the OUA West standings.
Â
The Lions' next game will take place on Thursday (Oct. 6) when the battle the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont. York will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to face off against the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field.Â
