The York University Lions women's soccer team took the pitch against the Brock Badgers on Thursday night (Oct. 6) at Brock Soccer Field in St. Catharines, Ont. The Lions left the field victorious after 90 hard fought minutes and a final score of 2-1.
All of the offensive action took place in the first half of the match, as the second would prove to be a defensive struggle.
The Lions would find themselves behind early on after Brock's Alysha Bonany scored in the fourth minute of the match off of an assist from Alex Crawford.
Being in an unfamiliar deficit early did not shake the Lions and they rallied back 10 minutes later. In the 14
th minute of the match
Farkhunda Muhtaj (Toronto) responded with an assist from
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.).
With the game tied up at 1-1, York turned to all-Canadian striker Ghoneim, who broke the tie in the 22
nd minute of the match with an assist to
Mika Richards (Brampton, Ont.). It was Ghoneim's OUA-leading 13
th goal of the season.
The second half of the match was all York defence as
Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) kept the door shut on all shot attempts.
Thursday's win gives the Lions their ninth win of the season as they maintain the top spot in the OUA West standings with 30 points and a 9-0-3 record. The Badgers dropped to 4-7-1 on the season with only 13 points and the seventh spot in the OUA West.
After six straight games on the road, the Lions will finally return home next Wednesday (Oct. 12) to host the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field in a game beginning at 6pm.
