RAMS SWEEP LIONS IN STRAIGHT SETS

The York University Lions women's volleyball team went down in straight sets to the Ryerson Rams in their first regular-season match-up of the year on Saturday evening (Nov. 12) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The match was a lopsided affair through the first two sets as the Rams won 25-10 and 25-11 for a quick two-set lead.

The Lions rebounded in the third set, however, with a much stronger showing. They came back from being down 5-2 and 16-14 to be tied at 26-26. But the Rams won back-to-back points from there, on a pair of kills, to take the set 28-26 and win the match.

Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) and Melissa Monkhouse (Guelph, Ont.) led the Lions with 9.5 points each, and Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) put up eight.

Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) and Mimi Demski (Etobicoke, Ont.) both led the Lions with 14 assists apiece.

The Lions have now lost two in a row after a 2-0 start and sit in a four-way tie for third place in the OUA East standings at 2-3. The Rams have pulled ahead of the pack and are currently second in the division with a 4-2 record thanks to a four-game winning streak.

The Lions will be back in action again on Sunday (Nov. 13) in their toughest match of the season against the defending OUA and CIS champion Toronto Varsity Blues, who currently sit at No. 3 in the national rankings.
