The York University Lions men's basketball team let a six-point third-quarter lead get away against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night en route to a 74-67 loss at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Lions took their first lead of the game right at the end of the first quarter and carried it through to late in the fourth, but the Golden Hawks outscored the Lions 28-15 in the final frame to steal the victory.
Â
In the first quarter the Lions and Golden Hawks played each other close.
Nidun Chandrakumar (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) each had four points as the quarter ended with a score of 19-18 for the Lions.
Â
After a productive first quarter the Lions would look to build off of their one-point lead.
Nana Adu-Poku (North York, Ont.) would lead the charge in the second with his seven points off the bench. His effort, along with six more points from Frederick, would give the Lions a 38-28 lead as the half ended.
Â
Entering the third quarter the Lions had a comfortable lead but the Golden Hawks would not lay down.
Julio Vazquez (Toronto, Ont.) hit two shots from behind the arc to record six points in the third quarter, helping the Lions in their effort to remain undefeated. The quarter would end with the Lions still in the lead 52-46.
Â
However, in the fourth the Golden Hawks chipped away at the Lions lead.
Brandon Ramirez (Scarborough, Ont.) did his best to combat the Hawks charge with six points in the quarter, but after a slew of three pointers and free points from the charity stripe the Golden Hawks snatched the lead with 32 seconds left on the clock. The Lions would not be able to recover from this and would suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
Â
The Lions will next head to Thunder Bay, Ont., to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night (Nov. 26). Their next home game will come on Friday, Dec. 2 against the Algoma Thunderbirds at 8pm.
