Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | By Joey Ricottone

SHEPPARD'S THREE-POINT NIGHT LEADS LIONS OVER GEE-GEES

Derek Sheppard factored into every goal, including scoring the game winner in double overtime, to lead the York University Lions men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the nation's capital on Saturday night.

Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the second extra frame to give the Lions their eighth win of the season and they remain in second place in the OUA West Division.

In the first period neither team was able to hit pay dirt and the game would move into its second frame with a 0-0 tie.

The second period saw the first goal of the game as Steven Janes (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored in the final minute of play with assists to Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) and Sheppard. The second period would come to a close with the Lions leading 1-0.

In the third period the Gee-Gees came alive as Brendan Jacome scored the tying goal just 3:21 into the frame. Less than six minutes later, the Gee-Gees added on to their first goal, as Jacob Harris would score one of his own, giving them the 2-1 lead.

The Lions would not sit back, however, and Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) responded with the tying goal only two-and-a-half minutes after the Harris marker. Sheppard again earned an assist, as did Janes.

With time expiring the scoreboard would read 2-2 and overtime would be needed to decide the game, and Sheppard proved to be the hero.

The Lions' next game will take place on Friday night (Nov. 25) when the Toronto Varsity Blues welcome York to Varsity Arena. They will return home the following day to face the Windsor Lancers at Canlan Ice Sports at 7pm.
