The York University Lions men's hockey team came back from a two goal deficit to defeat the Windsor Lancers 3-2 in double overtime at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday night.
Third-year defenceman
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) scored 2:11 into the second extra frame to give the Lions their third win in a row and improve their record to 10-4-2 on the season. It was his third overtime goal of the season and seventh overall, and he is tied for sixth in OUA scoring with 21 points in 16 games.
Fourth-year forward
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) forced overtime with a power play marker 10:40 into the third period to even the score at 2-2. The Lions first got on the board in the second period when third-year forward
Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) found the back of the net just 38 seconds after the Lancers had scored their second goal of the game. Petersen had a hand in each Lions' goal, finishing with a goal and two assists on the night.
Although it took York more than halfway through regulation to get on the board, it wasn't for a lack of trying. The Lions challenged Lancers goaltender Kris Joyce by putting 31 shots on net. On the other end of the rink, Lions rookie goaltender
Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) faced just 22 shots on the night, earning the win by making 20 saves.
The Lions will wrap up their fall schedule next weekend with a pair of home games at Canlan Ice Sports. Up first is a game against the Carleton Ravens on Friday night (Dec. 2) at 7pm.
