The York University Lions men's hockey team scored four unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 victory over the No. 8 nationally-ranked Ryerson Rams on Graham Wise Night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Thursday night (Nov. 3).
Â
The victory is York's second of the season over their nationally-ranked city rivals following a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Rams two weeks ago. The Lions improved to 6-3-0 on the year and moved into first place in the OUA West Division, while the Rams fell to 5-2-1 and sit second.
Â
Ryerson opened the scoring at 4:53 of the first period on a goal by Daniel Clairmont, but the lead did not last long as less than two minutes later,
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) found the back of the net on a power play to even the score.
Â
The score remained 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Â
The second period was characterized by special teams as the Lions scored twice on the power play and Ryerson once shorthanded.
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) began the scoring just 1:24 into the period with the man advantage and the Lions led 2-1 for most of the period.
Â
At 15:20, Aaron Armstrong scored with a teammate in the penalty box to equal the score at 2-2, but 48 seconds later
Scott Feser (Red Deer, Alta.) gave the Lions the lead again and they carried the one-goal advantage into the final period.
Â
The Lions finally got an insurance goal midway through the third off the stick of
Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.), again on a power play. Milner scored his second of the game at 13:40 to effectively put the game out of reach, and
Kyle Campbell (Halifax) scored into an empty net in the final minute to round out the scoring.
Â
Milner (two goals, one assist) and Petersen (one goal, two assists) each put up three points on the night, while Mort, Feser and
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) added two points each.
Â
Rookie goaltender
Alex Fotinos (Toronto), making his second consecutive start between the pipes, stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced to pick up the win.
Â
The Lions will head back out on the road on Saturday night (Nov. 5) to face the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field in Waterloo, Ont. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
